Spectral Zoology announces its award for the most attractive member of the animal kingdom for 2016. It's the White Oak Borer Beetle! It was a tough choice, because this little beetle had some strong competition (we're looking at you, Pygmy Marmoset). In the end, beetle family overwhelmed the competition. Congratulations.
Please go here for a video of 16 goats in a tree. In Chinese astrology, the year of the goat/sheep (2015 is one, by the way) should bring prosperity and good fortune. If you see 16 goats in a tree during the year of the goat, you'll have such extreme good fortune that it will hurt.
We here at Spectral Zoology think astrology is bunk. No offense. Just our opinion. (Yeah, we totally believe in spirit animals, however. Ha.) In any case, we do like animals and according to Chinese astrology, there are animals symbolic of the 12 signs of the zodiac. Each year gets an animal. Do some web searching and discover yours.
The rat is allegedly shrewd and ambitious. It can be selfish and scheming, and may be prone to psychological disorders. Whatever. If you're a rat you get yang, you get water, you get the Lilly as your lucky flower. Look at those pretty rat ears, would you?
Two new vampire crab species discovered! Take a look at the beautiful images. They are called "vampires" because of their glowing yellow eyes. Unfortunately they are already popular in the aquarium trade. Better to leave them alone.
I’ve noticed a trend recently in which people call other people spirit animals. Granted, people are animals, but the fun is lost when you’re not taking inspiration from a different species. The concept of a human spirit animal is even more absurd than concept of animal spirit animals - which we have a lot of fun with here at Spectral Zoology. Let’s take an example. Would you rather have a lappet-faced vulture as your spirit animal or some major league baseball player? No contest – real animals can have talons or tentacles. They can crawl into your ear, or shred flesh with massive teeth or tusks.
If your spirit animal is a puny human, I pity you. Some flash-in-the-pan actor or singer will be gone tomorrow. Termites are forever.

Domesticated for 5,000 years, buried with pharaohs, eaten in China, it's the Equus africanus asinus. If the Rolling Stones song, "Beast of Burden," is a favorite of yours, the spirit of a donkey may be hovering over your shoulder. Do you defend yourself by biting and kicking? Do you make liberal use of hind gut fermentation? Yup, this is your spirit animal.
This Australian marsupial's hind end has two interesting facts. (1) When in defense mode, the wombat goes partway into its burrow, leaving a very tough, bony posterior sticking up to provide protection. Its powerful rear legs can also cause a lot of damage to attackers. (2) The wombat has cube-shaped poo.
If you use your buttocks for protection, this could be a sign that your spirit animal is the wombat. A fecal shape exam would help provide confirmation.
Grimpoteuthis discoveryi. Lives deep: as much as 4,500 meters. Enjoys a tasty copepod now and again. Dislikes sharks. Average size - 25 centimeters. If you meet one, avoid the temptation to use it as a hand puppet. Leave our octopus friends alone.
That's right. 35 strange animals in your socks or in your pants. It's never too late for a holiday order.
